Joe McMahon is currently a sophomore journalism student at the University of Texas at Austin and is set to graduate in Spring of 2015. He is interested primarily in sports broadcasting, and hopes to be involved with professional hockey in some aspect.
Hailing from Manhattan Beach in Southern California Joe grew up as an avid Los Angeles Kings fan, and additionally would cheer for the Dodgers and Lakers. He played roller hockey and baseball growing up, and ran track (100m, 200m, 400m, and relays) in high school.
For 3 years at Mira Costa high school he was a reporter, tech-crew, and anchor for the student run Mustang Morning News. In this class he developed skills with camera work, voiceovers, and editing video with Final Cut Pro. His senior year he was named Sports Producer, as well as continuing appear as a sports and news anchor.
Additionally he has worked with Logic audio editing and recording softwares throughout his time as a musician. McMahon plays guitar and was involved in a progressive metal band for 3 years in high school, as well as various other side projects.
With his primary interest in sports casting, Joe worked as a payed interned at a sports medicine treatment center (AIM) to better understand injuries and rehabilitation, which are very relevant in the world of sports. He feels that any knowledge that he can attain now will can potentially help him on-air one day.
While Joe has yet to get involved in a campus media organization at UT, he has been heavily involved in the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity on campus. He was elected Vice President of the chapter for the 2013 term after previously serving as a recruitment chair for 2 semesters. This experience has greatly improved his organizational and administrative skills.
He currently plans to become involved in Texas Student Television, the only FCC approved student run broadcast in the nation, this semester to better improve his already proficient skills in broadcasting to a live audience.
As mentioned before, Joe McMahon also has a great interest in music. Having been a musician for over 8 years he is knowledgeable about music theory, performance, and of course, critique. Music journalism does interest McMahon in some aspects, but his ideal career path is centered around sports.
In the summer of 2012 Joe worked as a camp counselor for the Sharefest Youth Development Academy. The summer camp is a free camp offered to “at-risk” children, and Joe dealt with many different personalities and attitudes throughout the camp. He claims that he doesn’t like kids, but after that experience his mindset seems to have changed, at least a little bit.
